A mechanical seal or sealing gasket is a component made of adaptable material that serves to seal the joint between the machined faces of closing elements of gearboxes and generally in any hydraulic and/or pneumatic element that carries lubricant inside. These prevent lubricant or fluid from leaking to the outside due to a small defect in the machining or closure zones, or other mechanisms with internal pressure such as engines or compressors.

Gaskets save money on machining joint surfaces because it is not necessary for their coupling to be completely accurate, as the gasket corrects any possible flaws in the machining.
